BROADCAST SHEET DECODER

1970 DODGE CHARGER (XH29)

***This page is updated as Broadcast Sheets are sent to us***

Please Send Yours Today!

The information below is only data that has been proven to exist on 70 Charger broadcast sheets based on the data in the 70 Charger Registry Database. As more broadcast sheets are received and new information/codes are identified they will be incorporated into this list.

The broadcast sheet is the build sheet that was printed at the factory and used by the assembly line workers to build the Charger. It tells them all the options to throw on the car as it moves down the assembly line.

The broadcast sheet was sometimes left in the vehicle as it left the factory and might be found under the back seat, under the front seats, under the carpet or taped to the back of the glove box.

If you are lucky you will find a broadcast sheet in your Charger....if you are very lucky it will actually be the right one for your car (the wrong sheets have been routinely found in cars) and if your very, very lucky it won't be illegible. Many are heavily imprinted with the seat springs and make sections of the broadcast sheet unreadable, however in some instances, the 70 Charger Registry Database can assist in determining what the illegible values are.

The data on the broadcast sheet is a combination of option codes, part numbers and assembly line numbers which can be hard to decipher. The 70 Charger Registry Database has allowed us to build a clearer understanding of what each code means. Decoding the broadcast sheet is as simple as looking at each box and cross referencing to the data below.

NOTE: If you have not yet registered your 70 Charger with the 70 Charger Registry please do so as it helps us build the data required to provide 70 Charger owners with this type of information. If you have your broadcast sheet, or one that belongs to another 70 Charger, again, please send the 70 Charger Registry a copy.

The 1970 Dodge Charger broadcast sheet will have the following heading at the very top of the sheet:

CHRYSLER CORPORATION CAR PRODUCTION BROADCAST

F SERIES 1970

To decode the broadcast sheet we will start with line 1 at the top working left to right across the sheet and then down line by line through line 11 at the bottom and then into the REMARKS section. Let's begin.

LINE 1 BASIC CAR

SEQUENCE NUMBER:

This number was used by the St. Louis Chrysler Assembly Plant staff as an in-house method of tracking the vehicle at the plant, and through the assembly process. It may begin with the letter B or the letter C. To date there is no determination on when or why the plant would use the letter B versus the letter C.  The Sequence Number, in of itself, is of no clear use to you the owner.

VEHICLE ORDER NUMBER:

This box is divided into two sections. The first three characters represent the build or production date of the car. This is the date the car was actually built at the assembly plant. The production year for the 1970 Charger began in August 1, 1969 and ran to July 10, 1970. The production date code is 3 digits and includes a factory identifier for the month (1 digit) followed by the day of that month (2 digits). The possible codes are:

8=August 1969             01-31
9=September 1969      01-30
A=October 1969           01-31
B=November 1969      01-30
C=December 1969       01-31
1=January 1970            01-31
2=February 1970         01-28
3=March 1970               01-31
4=April 1970                 01-30
5=May 1970                  01-31
6=June 1970                 01-30
7=July 1970                  01-10

** Note: Last build date was July 10, 1970

The next characters identify the vehicle order number. This number is simply the order number assigned to the dealership on the original order sheet. Sometimes it is preceded by a letter, such as follows:

C = Canadian Export

E = Export

K = Special Order (Y39)

M00 = Show Car

M90 = Showcar with Factory Sunroof

M99 = Factory Sunroof Car (M51)

Q = Executive Lease (Y22) or Public Relations (Y28)

T = CLC Lease Car (Y24)

W = Dealership Rental Car

Note: It is possible that when a car qualifies for multiple designations, one will trump the others. The only documented example of this to date is a Y28 Public Relations car that also came equipped with a factory sunroof (M51) and the car could have been designated with an M or Q, in this case M was used, thereby trumping the use of Q.

VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER:

This is the full VIN of the car which is broken out in six sections.

Car Line: For 1970 Chargers this will always be XH which means it is a base level Charger.

Body Type: This will always be 29 which means Sport Top.

Eng: This denotes the engine the car came with. The applicable codes here would be:

            C = 225 Six Cylinder

            G = 318 cid 2bbl

L = 383 cid 2bbl

N = 383 cid 4bbl

Year: For 1970 Chargers this will always be 0 (zero) which is the last digit of the model year.

Plant: This denotes which assembly plant built the car. Since all 1970 Chargers were built exclusively at the St. Louis Assembly Plant this would always be G.

Sequential Number: This is the build sequence number at the St. Louis plant. The plant started the 1970 model year with sequence number 100001 and worked up from there. One must remember that the St. Louis plant made other models as well, not just Chargers so the sequence number is assigned to each car as it moved in order through the assembly plant. If your sequence number is 102410 that does not mean your Charger was the 2,410th Charger built, but rather your car was the 2,410th car (all models) built at the plant.

Y   VEHICLE DELIVERY AND HANDLING   Y:

This section consists of option codes that reflect what specifications/markets the car was built for and special handling scenarios if applicable. You will note the heading has a Y designation. This means the option codes that appear in each box is automatically preceded by a Y. There are seven boxes in this section each with a unique meaning.

Build To Spec For  0-: This code determines what specifications/market the car was built for. The applicable codes here would be:

            Y05 - Built to USA Specifications

            Y07 - Built to Canada Specifications

            Y09 - Built for Export Specifications

Dom. Public  11: This box (option code Y11) identifies if the car was a Domestic Publications Military Sales Order. This would be denoted with a value of 1.

Lease Bid Sale: This identifies if the car was sold for a special purpose. If this box is populated then the Sold Car Sales Bank box (see below) would be empty. The only code seen in this box is:

            Y13 - Charger DEMO

            Y28 - Company Car / Public Relations

Sold Car Sales Bank  1-: This code indicates whether the car was built for a customer order, or was part of a sales bank pre-determined order by the company that was shipped to dealers for sales on their dealer lots. To clarify, a customer order means a customer sat down with a dealer and completed an order form outlining exactly what options the customer wanted his/her car to be build with. A sales bank car is one that was delivered to the dealer and a customer would buy the car off the lot. In that scenario someone within Chrysler decided what options to build the car with, likely based on marketing data, and the customer had no hand in that process. The applicable codes here would be:

            Y12 - Dealer Export Sale (dealer order for export)

            Y14 - Sold Car Order (customer order)

            Y16 - Sales Bank Order

Special Order  39: This code (option code Y39)identifies if the car was designated as a special order. This would be typically for show cars, road tests and the like where the car was designated for extra care in the assembly process to ensure the highest vehicle quality and fit and finish. A value of 9 in the box means this was a Special Order car and would be extremely rare.

New Car Service  8-: This code would designate if the car was given special service, such as gasoline and prep before delivery. To date we have seen no 70 Chargers with a code here.

Show Car Finish  9-: This code would designate if the car was given special care and attention when they applied the paint/finish. To date we have seen no 70 Chargers with a code here.

X   EXPORT - CANADA   X:

This section is comprised of numerous boxes each representing a different option in 1970 related primarily to export requirement related options. Not all are applicable to a 1970 Charger. Working left to right the displayed boxes are:

Kilo  21: This box was used to identify if the car was equipped with a 240 Kilometer Per Hour speedometer (option code X21). This would be reflected by a value of 1 in the box. Back in 1970 Canada had not yet joined the rest of the world in adopting the metric system and as such Canadian cars would still use the 150 MPH speedometer.

Lt. Beam Shift  25: This box identifies a unique export headlight high beam / low beam shift process (option code X25). That being, how the lights shift from low beam to high beam. What this means or how it works is unknown (if you know please tell us). The option X25 is noted as Left Way Beam Shift Headlamps. Taking a wild guess, perhaps export cars have a unique headlamp system that when the lights are switched from low beam to high beam the lights momentarily aim left..since many export countries drive on the left hand side with opposing traffic on the right side this may have been a process to avoid blinding oncoming traffic when high beams were selected..like I said, it's a guess. No 1970 Chargers have been found with this option code selected.

3_: This box was used to represent option codes that begin with X3_. There are no X3_ option codes applicable to 1970 Chargers and as such this box is always empty.

4_: This box was used to represent option codes that begin with X4_. There are no X4_ option codes applicable to 1970 Chargers and as such this box is always empty.

Dual Zipp H/Lining  51: This box was used to identify if the car came equipped with dual zippered headlining (option code X51). This would be reflected by a value of 1 in the box. No 1970 Chargers have been found with this option code selected.

Relocate Dome Lamp  52: This box was used to identify if the car came equipped with a relocated dome lamp (option code X52). Export models that came with the zippered headliner required the dome lamp to be relocated. This would be reflected by a value of 2 in the box. No 1970 Chargers have been found with this option code selected.

Sealed Speedo  53: This box was used to identify if the car came equipped with a sealed speedometer (option code X53). This would be reflected by a value of 3 in the box. No 1970 Chargers have been found with this option code selected.

Rad. Splash Guard  54: This box was used to identify if the car came equipped with a radiator splash shield (option code X54). This would be reflected by a value of 4 in the box. No 1970 Chargers have been found with this option code selected.

Rad. Air Shield  55: This box was used to identify if the car came equipped with a radiator air shield (option code X55). This would be reflected by a value of 5 in the box. No 1970 Chargers have been found with this option code selected.

Rubber Stg. Col. Coup.  62: This box was used to identify if the car came equipped with a rubber steering column coupler (option code X62). This would be reflected by a value of 2 in the box. No 1970 Chargers have been found with this option code selected.

Label Mfg. For Export  66: This box was used to identify if the car came equipped with a special manufacturers label/decal identifying the car as an export model (option code X66). This would be reflected by a value of 6 in the box.

6_: This box was used to represent option codes that begin with X6_. With the exception of option codes X62 (Rubber Steering Column Coupler) and X66 (Manufacturers Export Label) noted above, there are no X6_ option codes applicable to 1970 Chargers and as such this box is always empty.
